known to occur but the haemodynamic changes were much more pronounced in our patient during tumour manipulation and excision compared with phaeochromocytoma. We also suggest that total thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection for cancer is likely to be prolonged and the surgery should be staggered for minimizing haemodynamic changes and the use of an EMG reinforced endotracheal tube for intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring may be helpful.

Feasibility and safety of xenon compared with sevoflurane anaesthesia in coronary surgical patients: a randomized controlled pilot study.
BACKGROUND To date, only limited data exist about the use of xenon as an anaesthetic agent in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The favourable cardio- and neuroprotective properties of xenon might attenuate postoperative complications, improve outcome, and reduce the incidence of delirium. Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the feasibility and safety of balanced xenon anaesthes...
متن کاملEarly cognitive function, recovery and well-being after sevoflurane and xenon anaesthesia in the elderly: a double-blinded randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND The postoperative cognitive function is impaired in elderly patients after general anaesthesia. The fast recovery after xenon anaesthesia was hypothesized to be advantageous in this scenario. We compared early postoperative cognitive function after xenon and sevoflurane anaesthesia in this study. METHODS The study was approved by the local ethics committee and written informed cons...
متن کاملXenon triggers pro-inflammatory effects and suppresses the anti-inflammatory response compared to sevoflurane in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
INTRODUCTION Cardiac surgery encompasses various stimuli that trigger pro-inflammatory mediators, reactive oxygen species and mobilization of leucocytes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of xenon on the inflammatory response during cardiac surgery. METHODS This randomized trial enrolled 30 patients who underwent elective on-pump coronary-artery bypass grafting in balanced anae...
متن کاملXenon as an adjuvant to sevoflurane anesthesia in children younger than 4 years of age, undergoing interventional or diagnostic cardiac catheterization: A randomized controlled clinical trial.
BACKGROUND Xenon has repeatedly been demonstrated to have only minimal hemodynamic side effects when compared to other anesthetics. Moreover, in experimental models, xenon was found to be neuroprotective and devoid of developmental neurotoxicity. These properties could render xenon attractive for the anesthesia in neonates and infants with congenital heart disease. However, experience with xeno...
متن کاملRandomized controlled trial of the haemodynamic and recovery effects of xenon or propofol anaesthesia.
BACKGROUND There is limited clinical experience with xenon in a large number of patients. We present intra- and postoperative haemodynamic and recovery data comparing xenon and total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol. METHODS A total of 160 patients aged 18-60 years (ASA I and II) undergoing elective surgery took part in this prospective non-blinded randomized controlled trial. After loca...
